New Vintage Listings!

I recently posted some great vintage finds in my shop!

More vintage items will be posted this week; I can't stop looking for great finds! I'm toying with the idea of opening a second shop just for my vintage finds - what do you think? Most of the advice I've gotten so far is that if you have distinctly different products, you should separate them. But, it sure does seem like a lot of work! What do you guys say?

This vintage casserole dish is a creamy white on the outside with an inside glaze of the lightest sage green. The high sides give it a unique look and the lid has hand painted yellow and green flowers clustered around an aged brass knob.
The lowest points in the center are 3.25" high and at the highest points, it measures 5". The length, from tip to tip is 10" and the width of the base is about 5".
There is a very small chip on the side, at most angles, you can't even see it. This can be easily repaired with filler if you choose to do so.
There is no marking on this pattern, but it is made by Taylor, Smith and Taylor.

Focus On... Studio Tuesday And A Giveaway!

{giveaway closed}

Studio Tuesday came to my attention a few months ago when I was looking for artwork for a friend's nursery. I ended up making something myself, but I fell in love with David's amazing whales. His work is so versatile; it would be at home in a nursery, a bathroom, a hallway or a dining room.

Tell me some basic info about yourself. My name is David Scheirer. I’m 27. I work for my friend’s landscaping company. I have a degree in painting. I like Turner Classic Movies. I play soccer. My favorite weather is foggy. I collect shark teeth. And I like bird watching.

What kind of mediums do you use and why? I mostly paint with watercolors. I like the process of layering colors and tones. You can produce a lot of different effects like that. I recently have also making linoleum cuts – I’ve always liked the idea of block prints.

What made you decide to sell on etsy? It was the first online venue I heard of that catered to artists and crafters. It has great traffic, low start up costs, is reputable, and has a lot of talented people in its community.

Where do you get your inspiration? Nature is a big influence. I love hunting for fossils, bird watching, and exploring outdoors. All of this plays a big part of inspiring and providing subject matter for my artwork. I’m also inspired by American realist painters like Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, and Andrew Wyeth.

What is your favorite music to craft by? I listen to a lot of different things… but mostly rock and roll type stuff I guess. I never tire of Neil Young and Tom Petty.

When it's cold outside... I drink hot cocoa

When I need a boost... I drink a coke… or take a nap.

{porthole and whale - my fave}

I wish I was... fluent in many languages.

If I could give one gift to everyone I know, it would be... one of my paintings

{fox}

If I could have coffee with anyone, it would be... Alfred Hitchcock. I bet he has some good stories. And listening to him is sort of mesmerizing.

If you were an animal, what would you be? An otter.

What's your favorite piece of your own? At the moment I like a small watercolor I did of moon shells.

What are your favorite blogs/websites right now?

David also offers custom pet portraits - something I am definitely thinking would be amazing! I would love a painting of Oliver in his Oliver-y-ness, captured forever!

Focus On... Krank Press!

Krank Press is a fabulous letterpress shop run by Elinor, a fabulous artist based in Los Angeles.
from her etsy bio:
"Two-dimensional wondercabinets for the rural cosmopolitan."
From the motorized platen press in my mossy-green Silver Lake garage (and the metal type library in my basement) I incorporate my drawings and woodcuts into handprinted calendars, greeting cards, books, bags and other assorted ephemera. Amongst the fascinations of Krank Press: backyard zoology, Los Angeles history, classic American graphics and fonts, vehicles.

What kind of mediums do you use and why? Letterpress printing (including linoleum blocks and woodcuts), and a bit of silkscreen, too.

What made you decide to sell on etsy? I wanted a place where friends not nearby could get some of my products, but then the site took off and has a life of its own.

Where do you get your inspiration? Vintage signage & packaging, Japanese anything, Japanese resist dying and Chinese paper cut-outs, folk art, postage stamps

What is your favorite music to craft by? Podcasts! Radiolab, Sound of Young America, the Moth...

If you were an animal, what would you be? An eared grebe, or any kind of grebe, really. they are basically cute little diving ducks (I love to swim!) who migrate from British Columbia to Baja and back.

What's your favorite piece of your own? The produce calendars (currently: LA, SF, NW and TX) are my biggest hit, but also my favorite combo of research, color, linoleum block art, etc.

{perpetual gardening calendars - san francisco bay, texas, southern CA, pacific northwest}

What are your favorite blogs right now? I've been so busy with printing & getting ready for my wedding that I've fallen off my usual blog-watching. Historically my favorites have been the Reference Library, Hoping for Happy Accidents, Fine Little Day and Lena Corwin's.

Focus On... The Letter G!

When I was in high school, I picked up a set of dog tags at a thrift store and wore them everyday. I made up stories about who they belonged to and what action those tags had seen. Unfortunately, they were stolen when I was in college. But I've never stopped liking the look of stamped jewelry. It's so personal and tangible. You can rub your fingers over it and feel the words. That's one of the reasons I was drawn to The Letter G, an etsy shop run by Lili, a super talented artist who gracious enough to do an interview with me.

Tell me some basic info about yourself. I am a 27 year old, music lovin', free-spirited, daydreamer with a fascination and appreciation for creativity and individuality.

Likes: Hiking. Muppets. Design. Singing in my shower. Road trips with my pals to concerts. Bold people. Humble people. My husband, 2 cats and dog. Tom Robbins novels. Dirty martinis and avacados. Freedom.
Dislikes: Boring wardrobes. Snobbery (it's just icky). Closed mindedness.

What kind of mediums do you use and why? What mediums do I use? Anything that strikes my fancy that day I suppose. I create anything from jewelry to headpieces to random pieces of art to t shirts so that leaves it pretty open. My husband is a glass blower and graphic designer and I really enjoy combining our skills and creating together.

What made you decide to sell on etsy? I used to sell wholesale to boutiques and eventually did the department store thing but I didn't enjoy it. I create very randomly and selling like that just didn't allow me the freedom that I wanted. Etsy really embraces the artistic and entrepreneurial spirit and makes it very easy and affordable for people like myself to use. In a world that is so standardized and watered down with our Targets and our Walmarts, Etsy is truly a breath of fresh air that I think reminds consumers to be aware of where their products come from. I'm proud to be a part of it.

Where do you get your inspiration? My inspiration often comes from the materials themselves. I don't see things as they are but the potential they have in them.

What is your favorite music to craft by? Ooooh, tough one. I like to keep my ipod on shuffle and just skip through until I find a song that fits the mood of what I'm working on. For example, the last 10 artists that played were: Beck, Wynton Marsalis, Rolling Stones, Dan Auerbach, Beatles, Joanna Newsome, Mos Def, Devendra Banhart, Bob Marley, Rodrigo y Gabriela.

If you were an animal, what would you be? I just asked my husband what animal he thought I'd be and he said a mix between an owl and a gazelle, hahaha, but we'll go with a dog. I think I'm loyal and compassionate.

What's your favorite piece of your own? Favorites at the moment are a guitar pick pendant with a Zeppelin quote, a vintage piece with a Kerouac quote and a vintage locket that I wear all layered together.

What are your favorite blogs right now? My friends and I have a blog called The Pinata that we started after our wedding in Mexico. We keep in touch, make up stories, make fun of each other. I love it. ...This blog is pretty spiffy too!
