Focus On... Horrible Adorables!

I was introduced to Horrible Adorables in a roundabout way - one of my previous featured etsy sellers mentioned this shop as a favorite. I checked it out and promptly added it to my favorites! Jordan, the mastermind behind this goodness, answered my silly questions, so read on for her interview!

Tell me some basic info about yourself.
Hello, my name is Jordan Elise. I live in Cleveland, OH above a funeral home with my boyfriend, pet squirrel and collection of odd creatures that decorate my studio. I am a toy designer by day and a quirky faux-taxidermist by night!

{momma and baby loch ness - my favorite!}

What kind of mediums do you use and why?
I use foam as a base for all my sculptures and layer wool felt over top. I love the texture created by stacking felt and the bold color combinations I can create. I also like that the material does not fray when cut by hand and keeps it's shape! As a finishing touch, I use real glass taxidermy eyes on most of my sculptures.. it makes them look alive (well, sort of)!

What made you decide to sell on etsy?
I love the community of extremely talented artists that are found on Etsy. It is a great resource for me to get my sculptures sold and noticed, as well as form relationships with other crafty people.

Where do you get your inspiration?
I draw a lot of my inspiration from Cryptozoology (the study of hidden animals), circus sideshow gimmicks and Cabinets of Curiosities.

What is your favorite music to craft by?
The Dandy Warhols are a favorite of mine and are always on heavy rotation in my studio.

When it's cold outside...
I'm bundled up in blankets, and am glad that I work from home and don't have to shovel my car out of Cleveland's winter snow.

When I'm hungry...
I eat veggies, fruit and lots of soy. I am vegetarian, but I really love fake meat products!

{kitacorn - my second favorite!}

When I need a boost...
I go out to get inspired! Visiting a book store or Natural History Museum always seems to do the trick.

I wish I was/were...
in London. I got the opportunity to go last summer for a month and take some art classes. It was one of the best experiences I have ever had!

If I could give one gift to everyone I know, it would be...
something handmade and from the heart.

If I could have coffee with anyone, it would be...
Tim Burton (although, I would prefer tea).

If you were an animal, what would you be?
A jackalope.

What's your favorite piece of your own?
A. For my thesis exhibition in art school I created my own "Room of Wonder" complete with Bigfoot wallpaper, handmade specimens on the shelves of a curiosity cabinet and tintypes of "the collector" discovering new species. It was fun to see how all my objects worked together to create a story within one giant installation.

What are your favorite blogs/websites right now?

You can find Horrible Adorables
